The Opportunity

Walker & Sloan are currently working with an established and growing civil engineering contractor who are looking to appoint a Planner to join their team in South Wales.

The business delivers a diverse range of civil engineering and infrastructure projects, with a particularly strong pipeline of work within the water sector.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a collaborative planning function, supporting projects from initial tender stages through to construction and completion.

The position would suit an experienced Planner looking for a new challenge, although applications are also encouraged from individuals with engineering, site management or project management backgrounds who have relevant programming experience and are interested in developing a career in planning.

Role Overview

As Planner, you will be responsible for developing, maintaining and monitoring construction programmes across a portfolio of civil engineering projects, primarily within water infrastructure.

Working closely with site management, commercial and preconstruction teams, you will ensure programmes accurately reflect project requirements, contractual obligations and progress on site.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Developing and maintaining detailed construction programmes, ensuring they are realistic, achievable and contractually compliant.

  • Producing and updating NEC3 and NEC4 programmes for submission and acceptance.

  • Monitoring site progress, identifying potential delays and supporting the implementation of mitigation strategies.

  • Reviewing compensation events and variations, providing programme-related evidence to support contractual submissions.

  • Working alongside commercial teams to support cost forecasting, resource planning and project reporting.

  • Providing accurate programme updates and progress reports to internal teams and external stakeholders.

  • Developing tender programmes and supporting preconstruction teams with competitive submissions.

  • Liaising with site teams across Wales and the South West to ensure programmes reflect actual construction progress.

  • Supporting junior members of the planning team and contributing to continuous improvement.

About You

The successful candidate will demonstrate strong organisational skills, excellent communication abilities and a proactive approach to problem-solving.

Essential requirements:

  • Experience using Asta Powerproject, Primavera P6 or Microsoft Project.

  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.

  • The ability to work collaboratively with site, commercial and operational teams.

  • A proactive and organised approach to managing multiple priorities.

Desirable experience:

  • Previous experience working as a Planner within construction or civil engineering.

  • A background in site engineering, site management or project management.

  • Knowledge of NEC3 and NEC4 contracts.

  • Experience developing and maintaining construction programmes.

  • Exposure to water infrastructure projects or other civil engineering schemes.

  • An understanding of construction methodologies, sequencing and project delivery.

Previous experience within the water sector would be advantageous but is not essential.
